Probation periodIn Arabic: فترة التجربة
Definition
A set period at the start of employment during which each party assesses the other, and during which the contract can be ended on easier terms. It has to be written into the contract. GCC labour laws cap its length.
How it varies across the GCC
In Saudi Arabia, articles 53 and 54 of the Labour Law require the period to be stated in the contract. It may be extended by a written agreement, and the total must not exceed 180 days.
The rules that apply to a specific matter depend on the state, any free zone involved and the current text of the law, so check the official source before relying on them.
